There are heaps of aids out there for those who would like to stop smoking. You may have seen the nicotine patch, maybe a few medications, or just trusted your own willpower and tried to go through it cold turkey. A group of people have made it with these methods, but unfortunately a whole lot of them have been let down. If this sounds like where you are, this may be the perfect time to try self-hypnosis, as not only does it help you quit, but also keep you there. You see, how many people have you heard of that has quit once, twice, maybe twenty times, only to pick it up a few weeks or months down the track? Quitting smoking for one week is one thing, quitting for a life-time is something completely different. With the help of self-hypnosis you will be able to change your views about smoking within your sub-conscious mind, which is the most effective way to end the addiction once and for all.

There are a few main concepts in self-hypnosis, some of which include relaxing, scripts, and visualizing. Being able to loosen up is imperative to be able to self-hypnotize. First of all you will be taught how best to relax and open your mind to new suggestions. We will go through certain main phrases or suggestions that are created to prevent you from smoking that it is important you repeat to yourself several times per day. You will also learn visualization, which is an important part of the process of quitting.

It is beneficial to be able to master the art of visualization if you want to learn self-hypnosis. Through the creation of mental images in your mind of you carrying out a certain activity, you will be more able to carry out the actual thing. When first starting out, it is advisable to create a picture of yourself as if you are watching yourself on TV. This is commonly known as dissociated visualization. This is a technique which can be very effective as it allows you to see yourself smoke-free. As soon as you have pictured yourself in this image, and imagined it as being a real event, it will make the result of quitting smoking an inevitability instead of a prospect.

Before you start visualizing you have to decide that you are going to quit, regardless of how. The result will be that from this day onwards, you will no longer be a smoker, period. We are all different emotionally, so you will have to create images that appeal to you. The key is, it has to make you feel something. If it doesn’t, try something else. These emotions that evoke a feeling are your keys to succeeding, plainly because the more emotions are entangled in your suggestions, the quicker and better you will respond to it. You have to find your own words, but here are some ideas. “Breathtaking”, “caring”, “admiring”, “wonderful”, “radiant”. The more striking and clear the image you create is, the greater an effect it will have because in the end these visualizations are your suggestions. Think of the smell of a cigarette. Imagine in your mind that it smells and tastes dreadful and the look of it makes you sick to the stomach. Use other associations to depict how bad it is. Imagine the smell of cigarette smoke as week-old socks or even worse, week-old prawn shells.

Like many others before you, using self-hypnosis and visualization to end the habit once and for all may be the last thing you do. Those who have done it before you found that through the use of their own imagination they can simply create the change you desire, strongly and effectively. With the use of visualisations you can depict yourself after the change has happened and therefore realize your goals of never smoking again more easily.
